A Letter to Mesa Music Students

Mesa Music Kids,

“One more time”, a lie I’ve often told you all. But this time I mean it!

Every year, a group of students say goodbye to this place. In fact, every student to walk through these doors has made their unforgettable memories, their ever-lasting friendships, and their inevitable exit. We make three years of music, and off you go onto bigger things - in music, academics, sports, dance, martial arts, theater, but above all, self-discovery. Maybe you’ve not considered the adults that guide you through, but it’s both joyous and difficult for us, too. As proud as we are, we know your journey is in its early stages, and you must continue to learn your voice, speak your mind, and spread your wings. We accept the rhythmic departures, year over year, and grow to love it, though we miss you still.

Every student is an individual. Yes, you are band and orchestra - a true case of the whole of the group being larger than the sum of its parts. But you are first and foremost your own individual. Please know that you are appreciated, valued, even loved for who exactly you are. Together we push to bring out that best version of yourself, and we do so through music - no better vehicle for that, in my opinion. But what remains for this adult who came to see you every school day for the last 4 months, 16 months, or 28 months, is that I’ve appreciated who you are right now, in this moment.

In this next phase, I ask you to honor the commitment you think you made to me, but you really made to yourself. For the good of the individual (that’s you), for the good of the group, and for the love of the moments you have shared in class, at concerts, and everything in between. Bring your best self to class every day, even when it’s difficult. Even when someone else makes it difficult. Remember that a good day turns into a good week. Good weeks turn into months, and before you know it, something that was hard comes as second nature. It’s not just the scale, exercise, or piece of music that sounds good - it’s your heart in harmony with the work you put in.

I hope that if you don’t already, you’ll come to understand why I need to leave a place I love so much, full of kids who are the heartbeat of the entire school. As it turns out, even adults are never done growing. Part of me wants to do this forever, but another part of me is itching to learn something new, and I’d regret not doing so at some point. I’m happy it took me two years to get there, otherwise I might not have known most of you. You’re a special group of students, not just among those in the school, but among all of the thousand-plus that have played music here. Every one of you is unforgettable in their own way, your best characteristics always on display.

Thank you, Mesa kids. You’re brilliant young people, growing up in a wonderful community, taking part in the best form of art. You’re planted in fertile ground, as a part of this place. Your potential for growth is unlimited. You’ve already inspired each other, other kids, teachers, other adults, your parents I’m certain, most certainly me. Thank you for being you.

One more time at your concerts this month. Then one more, and another, and another after that.

With love and music,

Mr. Gray

October Dates & Details

Greetings Students and Parents!

As we near our first events of the year, I want to clarify some details and dates for everyone.

Friday October 13 - Middle School Music Night with the MHS Marching Band - 8th Grade Only

All 8th grade Band and Strings students are invited / required to attend an evening of band and football with the MHS Band on Friday, October 13. We’ll meet at 4:45pm at the MHS Band Room (near the PAC across from Vons on Tierra Rejada) for a night of mingling, music, football, and FREE PIZZA. Brass, woodwind, and percussion students will bring instruments (strings students won’t bring instruments) and all will wear something Mesa colored or MHS colored.  Dismissal will be after the game at the MHS Band Room, usually around 10:00pm. Attire is casual, but please wear something Mesa Verde or maroon.

The night is no-stress, super fun way to get to know kids from Chaparral and Moorpark High, and the friendly, fun environment that the Marching Band provides. Parents are also encouraged to attend and sit with the other music parents behind the bands.

Wednesday October 25 - Coffee Concerts - ALL Grades

Are you ready for our FIRST live performance of the year?? Parents and other family are invited to our campus for a period-by-period concert, showcasing our work from the start of the year to this point.

The schedule will be as follows:

9:00-9:55 Puma Band

10:00-10:52 Wind Symphony

11:54-12:46 Wind Ensemble

1:31-2:23 Puma Strings

2:28-3:30 String Orchestra/Chamber Strings

Students will need to wear Concert Attire for this performance and Picture Day the following week. Attire is as follows:

Puma Band/Puma Strings: Black Mesa Music T-Shirt (will be provided), black pants/long skirt, black footwear

Wind Symphony: White long sleeve button up shirt, a tie of your choosing, black pants/long skirt, black footwear

Wind Ensemble/Chamber Strings/String Orchestra: Black long sleeve button up shirt, Mesa Music tie (will be provided), black pants/long skirt, black footwear

There will be no opportunity to change before performances, so students will either come to school wearing Concert Attire, or change during Lunch/PE.  I will give kids a chance to change after the performances.

Friday October 27 - Music Picture Day - ALL Grades

We will take our program pictures in full Concert Attire with instruments.  Full group, individual and buddy pictures, even across classes, will be available for purchase. Order forms will go home the prior week.

There will be no opportunity to change before pictures, so students will either come to school wearing Concert Attire, or change during Lunch/PE.  I will give kids a chance to change after pictures.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at some point in the next few weeks!

March Concert Info

Greetings Parents and Students,

I hope this email finds you well!  The main purpose of this email is to discuss the particulars of our March performances, as well as High School Music Auditions.

March 8, 9 District Concerts (7/8 Strings, Wind Ensemble)

Our district concerts will feature the top ensembles at Chaparral and Mesa Verde as well as all of the large concert ensembles at MHS.  Students need only to attend on the evening of their performance but are welcome as spectators on their “off” night. Of course, all non-performing Mesa Music students and families are invited as well.  This is an optional donation event, and we highly encourage all to attend!

After the concert, there will be a dessert-food social in the MHS Music Room for all to enjoy.  This is a great opportunity for students to meet their future classmates!

Call time: 5:30pm in MHS Music Room

Performance Start: ~6:30pm in PAC

March 14, 16 High School Music Auditions (8th only)

Middle School music is largely pointed toward preparing students to be successful in music at the high school level. In all of Moorpark, MS and HS directors work closely to align our programs for a seamless transition into high school, both musically and socially. We encourage all of our kids to continue especially since there are well-worn pathways to address many of the concerns kids and parents have regarding sports, foreign language, summer school, marching band, and others.

With 2 orchestras, 2 concert bands, a Jazz program, and the renowned Musketeer Marching Band at the high school it’s important to note that auditions are optional and for ensemble placement onlyEvery student that wants to be in a music class will be accepted. Audition requirements have been covered in class, but anyone looking for an audition time or more info need only contact Mr. Gray for more info.
